It wasn’t the job I thought my college degree would get me, but it was the job a friend did. I became a commissioned officer in the US Army National Guard at age twenty, and by twenty-two, around the time I completed college, I was managing or supervising people twice my age. It felt good to be paid well, but it felt better to be in charge. The issue with this streak is that when I told people to do something, they did it. I rarely faced severe confrontation, so when I did encounter it, every situation was different, and often ended with me on top. The world rotates, life moves on, and just like seasons we have the moments we enjoy, and the moments we wish we could forget. Sometimes we do learn some important lessons, like how to prevent someone from getting so angry at you they start to throw things.
One of the most life-changing experiences of my life occurred when I was down on my luck, depressed and unemployed, looking vigorously for work in any legal form it came in.
